About the Tour

The great Hindu epic Ramayana tells of the war of Lord Rama and King Ravana in Sri Lanka in 3000 BC. We follow the trail laid out on the Ramayana and visit the important Sri Lankan sites mentioned in the epic. Encompassing the island's scenic west coast and hill capital, this guided tour takes you on an unforgettable journey across numerous ancient temples and monuments as you relive the tales of Ramayana. This tour is one of the ultimate spiritual tours in Asia. It is an enriching religious and spiritual experience to Hindus, but it also offers in-depth knowledge of Ramayana heritage in Sri Lanka for non-Hindu travelers.

Day 2: Drive Negombo – Kandy
After breakfast, depart for Muneeshwaram and Mannavari temples in Chilaw.
According to the Ramayana, while departing Sri Lanka after the war, Lord Rama felt Bramhaasthi Dosham, a malevolent shadow, was following him for killing King Ravana, who was a Brahmin. He realized the Bramhaasthi Dosham wasn’t following him at Muneeshwaram. There, he was helped by Lord Shiva to get rid of the shadow. Mannavari temple is the first place Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva to rid himself of the Bramaasti Doshan.

Day 3: Day in Kandy
Have your breakfast at the hotel and explore the city of Kandy, also a UNESCO heritage site. You can visit the Sitha tear pond and the chariot path. After freshening up at the hotel, attend a pooja ceremony at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Enjoy a cultural show in the evening before returning to the hotel for dinner.

Day 4: Day in Kandy
Today, visit Dunuvila & Laggala, Yahanagala, Weragantota, Sitakotuwa and Gurulupota Lankapura.
King Ravana prayed to Lord Shiva at Laggala. He was said to have died at Dunuwila and his dead body was kept in Yahangala, meaning bedrock, so that his followers could pay their respects. It is believed that King Ravana landed his aircraft, Dhandu Monara, at Weragantota.

Day 5: Drive Kandy – Nuwara Eliya
Today, transfer to Nuwara Eliya. The city was named Little England because of its weather, mountains, and waterfalls. Visit Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple where Lord Rama’s forces gathered to fight King Ravana. Also, visit Gregory Lake and Victoria Park. Check in to a hotel in Nuwara Eliya for the night

Day 6: Drive Nuwara Eliya - Kataragama
Visit Sita Amman Temple. It believed at Sita Devi bathed in a stream running from the hill. A century ago, three idols were discovered in the stream. Now there is a temple housing them by the side of the stream.

Explore Hakgala Botanical Garden, one of the pleasure gardens created by King Ravana and expanded during the British period. Then make your way to Divurumpola, where Sita performed her Agni Pariksha, proving her chastity to her husband Rama. After that visit Ravana waterfalls, before going to Kataragama and checking in to your hotel.

Day 7: Drive Yalla – Galle
After breakfast, you have an optional tour to Yala National Park for a jeep safari. The national park is a huge area of forest, grassland, and lagoons bordering the Indian Ocean, in southeast Sri Lanka. It’s home to wildlife such as leopards, elephants, and crocodiles, as well as hundreds of bird species.
Inland, visit Sithulpawwa, an ancient Buddhist monastery. Nearby caves contain centuries-old rock paintings. To the Southwest, Magul Maha Viharaya also has ancient Buddhist ruins. Head to Galle and join a Galle city tour before checking in your hotel.

Day 8: Galle – Colombo
After breakfast, depart for Colombo. Check in to your hotel before visiting Kelaniya Temple. Buddhists believe the temple to be hallowed by Lord Buddha during his third and final visit to Sri Lanka, eight years after gaining enlightenment. Its history would thus go back to 500 BC.
Also, join a city tour of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital and its largest city. The traders and settlers over the years—the Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch and the British, have left in their wake churches and monuments, names and religions, costumes and food and smatterings of their languages that have been absorbed into the Sri Lankan language.
